still

When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with You above the storm
Father you are King over the flood
I will be still and know You are God

Amidst the rush of the world, being still is a virtue. (without sound in the world, people won’t treasure silence. Cue:225) Things just rush us by ever so often. That still voice in us just get ignored completely. It is no more just a song that we sing, it is more than the words we speak. It is much more than earthly treasure and desires. God did not promise us great lives on Earth per say, but we know the lasting eternity we have. God did not say that we will have financial riches, awesome grades, etc, he just said riches. We humans like to selectively interpret the word of God and turn it for our benefit. Ever so often, we want the gifts, but forget the giver. We want the blessings, but we totally ignore the ultimate blesser.

Forgive us. Forgive me.

(something like) CIP

*Leon is not in this picture. He came later…

Something new happened about a week ago. Our cell went for a community project, not for CIP hours, but just to do something worthwhile on a Sunday afternoon for 2 under-privilege persons. I think this is the first time that our cell leaders organised something like that. It has been a while since I last helped out at someone’s flat. Really good really good. It coincides with the compelling compassion theme after Radical!2009.

A note to myself then too. This is really not about just serving the elderly for the sake or just doing it, but to do it AND see them through God’s eyes, to understand God’s heart about poor and the weak, to have a compassion for them too, to be Christians that not just say they are God’s child but also act out of our overflow, and give out of what we have in excess.

Straight after church, we prepped ourselves, changed into more comfortable, ate a heavy breakfast, then we made our way to block 500 plus. Thanks Alv for the car ride there. :) Waiting for Ho to get somemore stuff for the clean up. Jes briefed us a bit about what to expect when we entered their houses to do the cleanup, the dos and don’ts, etc etc. Jes made it sound as though the elderly man and woman were so strict and fierce. wahaha. Anyway, we prayed, then we chiong-ed up.

In the house, we intro-ed ourselves, say hi, started a small conversation, asked him what he wanted us to clean up, and then we went along on our way. We started ’site’ surveying. Apart from a few DEAD cockroaches, the house that I was cleaning was relatively clean; the toilet was also quite well maintained. We got down to cleaning and arranging his house. The uncle we were helping out created nice pieces of artwork lah!!. He liked turtles too. He made them by threading small beads onto fishing lines, and tying them together. Very nice lah!. He also had a super cool looking transport system (car). He explained to us that he travels around the neighbourhood using that battery operated machine. This is a cool uncle. :)

When we were done with the cleaning part, Jes offered to pray for him, and he accepted gratefully. After the half hokkien half chinese prayer, we were going to say bye, when he started talking about his wife that passed away just a few weeks ago. He started welling up as he shared how she died, what symptoms she had. I mean, he was so quiet at first when we came to help, but now he started opening up. We were trying to contain our emotions too man. I guessed that he was very lonely after that unfortunate loss, but at least all of us that she is in a better place now. We bade our final goodbye, and then we left for a bak chor mee at a nearby hawker centre, celebrated Alv’s birthday too.

This CIP thingy really made me reflect about the multiple complaints I belt out when I am tasked to wash the dishes and do some household chores. We really take our homes (and I mean homes, not houses) for granted. This episode also made me think about the far future when my parents will get way older…will I be able to take their loss easily? I had better treasure them whilst I can.

God and I

You tell me that you love me so
and God I will believe in You
I want to be in Your family
God hold me, save me
I wanna be close to You.

The start of song-writing, I hope.

You tell me that you love me so
and God I will believe in You

I want to be in Your family
God hold me, save me
I wanna be close to You.

Some thoughts…

Just had a church-wide worship team teaching session. Was a really long, but really wonderful session with Mich’ael sharing his life testimony and how God helped him with the many hard decisions in his life. Here are some of the points that I can remember. Just thought of recording it down, for future reference.
  1. Just saying the sinner’s prayer is not the only step. In the world today, people get the misconception that salvation is attained when people just say that paragraph and go on living life as per usual. Saying that prayer and meaning it is one thing. We will have to continually and daily surrender our lives to God. How do we do that? Through our daily/regular devotions, prayer time, personal worship to God, we are able to connect to God, and be always doing God’s will. We cannot go on sinning when we have a choice to decide that we want to be a totally different child of God from the rest of our peers. Surrendering to God requires us to take our ‘past’ self, and ‘throw’ it away. We are never perfect, thus God’s grace comes in. Take note of this. If you love God, you wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt someone you love yea.
  2. Like above, being holy, means to be set apart. What is being set apart? Again, it is about being different. Like the examples he gave: he threw away his R&B CDs, he stopped eating certain food, etc. Depending on our calling, we need not be that radical. (but if God says so, go ahead). Start with small steps like not using vulgar language when everyone around us is doing so. Honouring your parents first is another example. Not cheating during tests/exams is another. What everyone else is doing, doesn’t make that particular activity right.
  3. Finally, being in worship team, we tend to get confused with the word worship. He reminded us about it again. Worshipping is not just about singing. Worshipping is about totally obedience to God our father. No examples needed here yea. Obvious stuff. :) Worship really begins when we actually leave the church to go about our daily activities.

22nd August 2009

The day started with Peter’s seminar in BBTC. Reminded us about being in God’s kingdom, and how we are supposed to act. Also kingdom is anywhere where God rules, which is everywhere lah! haha. He also reminded us about lawlessness, and how although the OT laws are somewhat superseded by NT laws, the NT laws are far more stricter than OT. In the 10 commandments, one of the laws is that You Shall Not Murder. In NT,

Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. 1 John 3:15 (New International Version)

Now anyone who hates his brother is a murderer. The bar has been raised in the New Testament. The OT law was not abolished, or the standard’s reduced. It is in fact the opposite. Go ponder about it. :)

Which will lead me to my next point about grace. We should not cheapen grace but lowering our standards. We shouldn’t blur the lines just to justify our actions.

Now, on to the next event of the day.

RADICAL!2009: Compelling Compassion

Whee! Lots of practices, months of planning, prayer, and most importantly, our utter dependence on our living God. At last, it culminated with a bang on the 22nd August 2009.

3 hours of intense praise and worship. 3 hours of basking in God’s presence. 3 hours of lifting God’s banner high up in the sky. 3 hours of simply having nothing on our agenda but God. 3 hours of catching on the vision of seeing people through God’s eyes, having compassion for people around us; be it the tissue-seller in hawker centres, the buskers, or just simply the lost.

Seeing, and literally, hearing the congregation sing praises to God really warmed my heart. Hearing the message from Mich really reinforces our ‘duty’ on earth. But those are just stepping stones. The real part of worship actually begins when we leave that sanctuary. Real worship don’t just stop at singing songs, jumping around….

Thanks to all who helped out in one way or the other. I am so so honoured to be part of this team to help the people encounter God in worship. I am so happy to be involved in this event. Thanks YC worship team core, for the great memories…

Radical!2009: Compelling Compassion – Teaser 1

Teaser no.1 out of 4.

This year’s worship event, organised by BBTC’s Youth Church has a theme, compelling compassion. Radical!2009 is a time where young people praise God for who he is, and for us to see the world through God’s eyes.

And nope, this is not a silent movie clip. :)

PM/Email me if you have any inquiries. :)
